Reviewing Evidence

So, you want to be a ghost hunter and go on exciting adventures in a quest for the paranormal. Creeping around dark and scary places sounds so exhilarating doesn’t it? Then there is always that elusive glorious moment when you will see and capture positive proof of life beyond death. Sounds great, right?

Unfortunately, It’s not so easy and this is not all there is to ghost hunting.

Yes, there are times when you may see or hear something out of the ordinary. Yes, you may get a rush of adrenaline now and then. In addition, yes, you may even capture something amazing. However, there is another side to paranormal investigation that is a little more tedious and requires infinite patience and focus. Evidence Review.

Evidence review is one of if not the most important thing an investigator does on each case. This is where you will find out what you are dealing with, if anything, and capture proof for the client that will validate what they have seen or heard. This is a lengthy process requiring full attention to detail.

On each case we investigate, there are hours of video, audio, photographs, and notes to go over. Basically, each investigation is done twice. Once in the field, and once in a quiet room. It is important to listen carefully to your audio, which may be hours of silence, or look through video and photos, which are usually of walls, halls, or empty rooms combing for something out of the ordinary. This takes hours of dedicated time and at times can be excruciatingly boring, but patience and focus are key.

If you are lucky enough to capture some kind of evidence, the next step is to prove it. This may require going back to the location and trying to replicate what you have seen or heard. You must be thorough in this because if you have not thought of everything that it could be, someone else will, and you will have your evidence quickly dismissed.
Therefore, although paranormal investigation can be fun and exciting, you have to go into it with the knowledge that it will take hard work, focus, and a lot of dedication. Be thorough, and eventually, you will be rewarded.

A Few Tips for Evidence Review

Audio: Use your computer to review your audio, not your recorder. Audacity is a great free utility that can help you transfer your audio. You can even transfer analog tapes by plugging a cord into your line in jack on the computer and your headphone jack on your recorder the cord is cheap and can be purchases at any computer/office store. Using your computer allows you to amplify the sounds as well as clean up unwanted noise.

Video: If you can you should review all video over the computer as well. You need to be able at times to show something frame by frame in order to determine whether or not it is paranormal. Make sure to stay focused. It can be hard at times when staring at an empty room, but you never know what you may catch. If possible, review the video in pairs. Your partner may catch something you missed or dismissed.
Photo: Use a program such as adobe photo to view your photos. The program will allow you to lighten or make other adjustments to your pictures, which may make it easier to see something.

Notes: These are invaluable to every investigation, especially during evidence review. Make sure your notes include times and all equipment readings. This will be important if something is caught on tape or audio. Notes should be able to verify where people were and what they were doing when the evidence was captured. This will help eliminate possibilities. Your notes may also add credence to your findings if you were getting equipment readings when your evidence was captured.
